Independence Day is a holiday for the privileged heterosexual wealthy white male. In 1776, blacks were still slaves, women had little to no rights, homosexuality was punishable by death and only white men could own land. 236 years later, we are still fighting racial inequality, reproductive rights for women, equal rights for LGBTQ people, equal wage for women and POC, fair distribution of wealth, etc. Our country was founded by wealthy white men to benefit the wealthy white male, what do the rest of us have to celebrate? When are we going to gain our independence from the ruling class that continues to oppress us?
